New England 04:45
It could’ve been nice, it would’ve been fine. If I would’ve stayed back, and didn’t drive the line. There was a time to call it off, in fall. I’ve been waiting on a sign too long. After summers on the road, these places feel so strange. It didn’t take long, to forget how things change. That time had left a mark, on me. Change repeats in all I see. But all I care, is just the same for all I do. The opposite of symmetry between us two. You can’t write songs, about pawning off your soul. Like taking out your heart, but feelin’ whole. A few more years alone, wouldn’t hurt so bad. Go to the same old bars, and never mention that my time out there was short, it wasn’t a surprise. Just let me sleep tonight, and never wake my eyes.

Better Days 02:59
Oh, as the sunshine reds my face. I’m thrown like a stone - put back in place. Callin’ on years like better days. And throw it all away. Breathing in the sunshine days But walking in circles, closet space. Callin’ on ears, in better ways. “Don’t throw it all away.” But ya fail to see, though it strikes a memory. And gather all our yesterdays for dreamin. It’s a longing for the light, or to win another fight. A chance to feel, a chance to keep on livin. Though still the sunshine reds my face, I’m seeing much clearer - keeping pace. I’m singing it now, and that’s okay. They’re singing along, our better days.

4:30am 04:05
Now that it’s 4:30 in the morning, I guess I just won’t get to bed - I’m noticing the stars tonight, are only in my head. But I’ll shoot up just like I’m one of them, if it makes me feel alright. I think I’d do about anything if I could just get some sleep tonight. Save a drink for me tonight. We’ll stay by the fire; I’ll make everything alright. Stay awake with me tonight. Your weight in gold, it seems, was much too small a price. If only I could sleep this feeling off. Turn your blind eye close to me, til the river runs to sea as time spent slowing, like dead grass growing. Don’t say anything, and forget everything. You were there when it started, I’ll be alone when it ends. Save a drink for me tonight We’ll stay by the fire; I’ll make everything alright. Stay awake with me tonight Your weight in gold, it seems, was much too small a price If only I could sleep this feeling off.

Crossing stars and dotting eyes - it’s funny how it all aligns to walk up next to you and say “hello.” Lying down with summertime, and watching as the days pass by - I’m waiting all night just to hold your hand. You make me want to rearrange my plans. Falling off the wheel again, I’m trying hard to understand how anything at all can change this fast. Locking lips with summertime, but holding onto days passed by I’d drive all through the night to be with you - but your inaction questions everything I do. Holding like the wait of my life Take all of these worries off my star crossed mind. Deciding on the color of your eyes Like an old song Thinkin back on summertime And holdin onto days passed by I’ve waited all this time to let you go.

You made me a bed with your eyes And I’m wrapped in you. Caught up in willow trees, rivers I’m sinking into. First names are enough for tonight, at least while I’m stuck on what might have been. This fire escape here’s no good, it’s made of wood. Don’t need to be steady just to last as long as it should. Plaster of paris, a glance from across the room. Desire, this here broken mirror we’re looking through. I’ve memorized all of my lies, caught fire in front of your eyes. Don’t lose hope - it’s alright, Set your worries aside, no other time to be alive. Don’t be sad over me, you still don’t know what you’re looking for. When these tired, walls catch fire Then we’ll pray for rain When these tired, walls catch fire I’ll be far away Don’t lose hope - it’s alright, Set your worries aside, no other time to be alive. Don’t be sad over me, you still don’t know what it is. Don’t lose hope - it’s alright, Set your worries aside, no other time to be alive. Don’t be sad over me, you still don’t know what you’re looking for.

Susannah 04:15
Hey there, Susannah. It’s almost 3am, let’s watch the stars. They’re falling like we are, like piano keys they harmonize our hearts. Oh, But the open road’s been good to me these years. Oh, My arms stretched wide while Jessie takes the wheel. Hey there, Susannah. You left your pocketbook back on my street. Your poems and drawings, and every page there lies a hint of me. Oh, but the open road’s been good to me these years. Oh, my arms stretched wide while Jessie takes the wheel. Am I stuck here in this car? Insane and craving. But all I’ve seen so far, is all that I know. Hey there, Susannah. I guess it’s better you’re not here, at least, tonight. The moon is my lover, with her I’ll sleep - a bottle by my side. Oh, but the country air tastes better than a beer. Oh, be much better if I’d wake to find you here Oh, but the open road’s been good to me these years. Oh, my arms stretched wide while Jessie takes the wheel.

And it seems to me, today, things just are not the same. They say, “It’s where you go, with what you know, it just takes time to change.” But it’s just the times that change. It’s just the times that change. And it seems to me, today, I’m walking backwards down the road. Pointed blank, it’s just right now ain’t as good as tomorrow. Cause it’s just the times that change. It’s just the times that change Look at the sky clearing, we are just walking out. Look at the people singing, happy just to be about. Take off your hat, let the wind blow through your hair. We were just talking, unroll the carpet, watching the highway, in the grass and smoking cigarettes. Singing bout rivers, and bout the future. This old guitar, and the girl - I wish I still knew her. And so the highway plays, to end another day. I’ve tried a million ways, to find something to say. Let’s hit Seattle - I’m leaving Kutztown. Down by the river in the valley that we’re going down. Time wasted planning - I should’ve told you all of the words I wished I said, but left alone. We watch the years fly, though we forget the names - we say goodbye as the times slow down to change We’ll split our town, and get lost in a day - but fetch my crown I’m the king of this cage. As we say goodbye, our lives to drift away. And I’ll remember you with every breath I take. But it’s just the times that change. But it’s just the times that change. It’s just the times that change.

Dancing on these walls of fabric, windows blocked to fade the day. Navigate the room so quiet, dodging clothing all the way. In this timed forgetfulness that morning brings as nighttime sings. Falling off onto the floor, to breathe the cold, disarm the warmth. Winter breathes in through the window, like a lover on my neck. Waking up in half surrender, shower off the guilt.

Song 131 03:35
In a way, the fire burns and sets my mind alight. Fed the words, forget the songs. To say, “Let’s put the past behind.” Cause all the while, I find, another way to see, dark instead of light. Wake up every day, though a bit too late, is still keeping up the fight. It’s a way I know that I, am much better than that. A fall, too far in time becomes a part of me Parading all complexity But still, I’ll do and do again. Until the dust collides, with ash from every time I’ve burned another song. I’ll write these forlorn words, with all the static curves in my head to fall. Cause I’ve stayed I know that I, am much better than that.

Rockaway 04:50
Leaving a full bag of autumn leaves, I’m sick of dealing with the snowfall, and cloudy days. Packing my suitcase with dollar bills, sneaking up a handful of sunshine, and leave a little rain to stay. And all that’s left are summer dreams, bottled water and Dramamine; let’s make this trip fast. But we’ll always have our memories, how you’re still the best to me, I want to make it last. Pulled up in the car to Josephine’s, the full sun starting to run away, but I don’t want to see it set. But still it’s better to be around, cause sadly it’s the thought that counts our numbered days. Love, take me down, down on the road to rockaway. Take me there don’t turn away, I want you to stay. Just look at all you gave to me, I mean that with sincerity, for you I’d walk the mile. We’ll dance around listening to, some frank, some fats, ella and lou, I love to see you smile. Love, take me down, down on the road to rockaway. Take me there don’t turn away, I want you to stay.

Starting over, getting older again. But ain’t that what you wanted? Spending night times in the darkness of lust. Cause love ain’t what you wanted. I can’t believe it’s time I can’t believe it’s time to go away You’re a new man, with a new life again. Cause ain’t that what you wanted? All this nothin, needing something again. Still lost on what you wanted? I can’t believe it’s time I can’t believe it’s time to go away

about

In their forthcoming album Painting Over Pictures, a colorful instrumental backbone supports a raw, honest lyrical body. Nick’s earnest songwriting and Bryce’s eclectic arrangements make for a compelling combination. The duo draws inspiration from traditional folk and contemporary music alike, and the result is an emotional and infectious record that deepens in meaning and scope the more you listen to it. Boasting an expanded palette that includes a string quartet, a horn section, and a host of other musical textures, Painting Over Pictures is the band’s most vivid and expansive album to date.
