You never forget your first time at the shore
The sunburn that never quite tans, the seaglass, the girl
Snowbirds and sandals and holes in my shirt
Palm trees a bit out of place in the Maryland dirt
Clouds crept up to the bayside port
From the second day on, every day, it thundered and poured
Thank goodness for the boardwalk bar and its warmth
And the girl at the fireplace and her shelter from the storm

We didn’t care, the waves still crashed and backed off just the same

We danced in the sand, we danced the whole night long

Wednesday began where the evening adjourned
The condo on the corner of Coastal and one thirty third
We hitchhiked down to the boardwalk arcade
And sprinted back all twenty one blocks in the rain

We danced in the sand, we danced the whole night long

Drove down Friday morning to say our goodbyes on the beach
Guitar packed behind the tire of my grey SUV
Her chin on my shoulder, we were soaked to the bone
One last slowdance in the ice-cold ankle-high foam
